Cheyenne, OK - Man, Woman Killed in Sideswipe on US-283

Cheyenne, OK (January 6, 2024) - Two people were killed following a car accident outside of Cheyenne on Sunday, January 5. The deadly crash took place on US-283 early that morning around 5:15 a.m. According to local reports, 59-year-old Rene G. De La Cruz of Elk City was traveling north on the highway in a pickup truck when the vehicle began to fishtail and enter the southbound lanes of the road. 

It was then that a van driven by 39-year-old Misti D. Morris hit the passenger side of the pickup. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to provide aid to the involved parties. It was later revealed that a passenger in the pickup, 24-year-old Thomas J. Stampul, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Morris was also pronounced dead by attending medical personnel, despite life-saving aid. De La Cruz was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital in Oklahoma City for treatment of critical injuries. The road was reportedly slick with windy conditions at the time of impact. No further information on the deadly accident is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash is being handled by local law enforcement officials.
