Elk City, OK - Granite Man Dies in Semi-Truck Crash at OK-6 & OK-152

September 13, 2024

Elk City, OK (September 13, 2024) - On Thursday, September 12, a Granite man was killed after a crash with an 18-wheeler in the area of Elk City. The deadly accident took place near the Oklahoma State Highway 6 and Oklahoma State Highway 152 interchange late that night around 11:01 p.m. Local reports revealed that a 2016 Volvo semi-truck operated by  53-year-old Jesus Herrera of Hialeah, Florida,  was headed westbound on OK-152 when he failed to yield at a stop sign.

The truck collided with a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria traveling southbound on OK-6 driven by 54-year-old Christopher L. Rains of Granite. The semi hit the driver’s side of the Ford. Emergency crews were rushed to the scene to provide critical aid to the involved parties. Despite life-saving measures, Rains sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Herrera reportedly smelled of alcohol, and it is believed that intoxication and failure to yield were the primary factors in the collision. Charges are currently pending. Herrera was arrested and taken into custody by responding officials. The area was temporarily closed for several hours until the resulting wreckage and other debris could be cleared. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly accident is in progress.

We want to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this hard time.

Truck drivers are known to work long hours, causing them to make critical errors behind the wheel. There are more than 500,000 large truck accidents reported nationally on American roads each year, resulting in over 5,000 fatalities and many more serious injuries.
