Lawton, OK (August 27, 2024) – A driver was killed in a head-on collision in the Lawton area on Monday, August 26. The fatal crash occurred at the corner of SW 97th Street and SW Coombs Road. Local reports indicated that a small black car and a green sport utility vehicle collided at the scene.
The driver of the black car was headed eastbound on Coombs as the SUV was headed north on 97th. For reasons still under police investigation, the driver of the SUV crashed head-on with the oncoming vehicle. The driver of the SUV, 79-year-old Jimmy Roach, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead. The occupants of the other vehicle were treated at a local hospital and later released. No further information on the accident is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the fatal crash is being managed by local law enforcement officials. More updates will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Certain types of crashes are more likely to result in serious or life-changing injuries. When two vehicles in opposing directions collide, it is known as a head-on crash, and these are known to be lethal. A little more than 10 percent of all fatal car crashes in 2020 were head-on collisions. The Insurance Information Institute (III) reports that this type of accident killed 3,631 people and hurt thousands more over the course of the year. Even more, these crashes have a nearly 56 percent fatality rate, much higher than other types of collisions.
