While walking is a great way to get around, it also puts you at risk of getting hurt on the road. You're more likely to get badly hurt when you share the road as a pedestrian. In the past year, about one in five deaths involved pedestrians.
In Oklahoma in 2021, 104 pedestrians were killed in car crashes and 149 were seriously hurt. This shows how dangerous it can be to walk on the roads in the state. The state's pedestrian fatality rate is nearly 13 percent of overall fatalities, which is lower than the national rate of 17 percent.
