Waukomis, OK (January 21, 2025) - On Monday, January 20, two people were killed after a car accident outside of Waukomis. The fatal crash was reported on US-81 early that morning around 7:05 a.m. Local reports revealed that 24-year-old Adrian Galaviz of Hennessey was traveling southbound in a Nissan when the vehicle left the road to the right before re-entering the southbound lanes, departing the road to the left, and entering northbound traffic.
The Nissan entered the path of an oncoming GMC Envoy with two passengers, and both vehicles collided. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to provide the necessary aid to the involved parties. Galaviz sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding personnel. The driver of the GMC, 63-year-old Janet Hicks, was also pronounced dead at the scene. A 29-year-old passenger in the GMC was injured and taken to Oklahoma University Health for treatment. The area was closed for several hours while emergency units were present. No further information on the incident is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash is being managed by local law enforcement officials.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims at this time. Our thoughts are also with the injured victim and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
Head-on collisions happen when two cars traveling in opposite directions crash. Drivers often cause accidents like these by turning into oncoming traffic, either due to distraction, negligence, or poor roadways. The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) says there were about 5,000 head-on accidents in the United States in 2021. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), these collisions have a nearly 56 percent fatality rate. These accidents are known to result in life-changing and even fatal injuries, leaving families in a difficult situation where they have to deal with unforeseen damages.
